As indie authors, it’s something we all need to remind ourselves.
It’s often easy to become discouraged when we see people in the indie writing community who seem to have become successful overnight, but the thing we all need to remember is that success does not happen overnight. And if it does, it’s extremely rare.
Most of those people had to struggle in obscurity for years, working their asses off day and night, before they saw significant sales.
The indie market is saturated with 99 cent books in every genre you could possibly imagine. It’s often very difficult to reach readers without a strong mailing list or an author platform with reach. But, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. It’s easier to reach readers than it ever has been before.
But, even if you fail to reach many readers with your first novel, it’s not the end! You only fail if you give up. If you have a dream, nothing should stop you from achieving that dream.
I think sometimes we forget how hard it is to write a novel. Writing even a single novel is an accomplishment. Some people go their entire lives trying to write just one novel, and they never finish. So, to complete that first book is a monumental accomplishment. But, finishing that book is only the beginning.
There’s the self-editing process, beta-readers, editors, and all kinds of things that you have to do before it’s ready for publication.
Most books do not sell well. Most don’t even break 200 copies sold.
So, if you survived that process once, you’ll survive it again.
Success comes from dedication, persistence, and maybe a little bit of luck.
