Martin! First published in the early 1980’s by Analog Science Fiction and Fact, the novella follows a group of scientists who conscript a questionable recluse of a ship captain (named Royd) who appears to them as a hologram aboard the Nighflyer as they trek across interstellar space in search of a mythical race of aliens known as the volcryn. Tension is high, however, as people start dying, and the suspicion turns to Royd. Is he a serial killer? An artificial intelligence? Or, is he some kind of living vaporous gas creature from a Jovian class planet… (I’m not kidding, that’s one of their theories).
